Teaching has been another thread running through my career and has given me valuable experience of learning from the other side of the design process — working directly with learners and seeing how differently people understand, engage with and respond to information.
I have taught a wide range of ages and abilities, from children and young people through to university students and adult professionals. Alongside formal teaching, I have designed and delivered workshops in a variety of settings throughout my career.
These experiences continue to influence my approach to instructional design. They have reinforced the importance of meeting learners where they are, making complex ideas accessible, and creating learning that encourages curiosity, confidence and independent thinking.
Visiting lecturer in creative arts
As a Visiting Lecturer in Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire, Dec 2015 – April 2021: supervising undergraduates with their final year dissertation, essay marking, delivering lectures on story structure, myth, empathy, engagement, and a short filmmaking module.
Professional workshops
Bespoke workshops for communication and marketing specialists, 2019. Practical workshops on the process of making video content. From understanding the audience, through crafting your story, and finally some easy to use software for making simple videos.

Creative workshops for adults
Creative workshops and activities for people living with dementia; 2015: stop motion animation using objects in the room, timelapse video of drawing activities, crafting activities.
Creativity for teachers; 2007: workshops to develop creative confidence in primary school teachers. Confidence in making art enjoyable, activities they can offer, how to do stop-motion animation at school.
Museum boxes for teachers; 2006: workshops to support creative uses of museum boxes for school teachers. Covering activities they can do with students, ideas for curriculum integration, and confidence in delivering creative activities at school with objects in the museum boxes.
Creative workshops for young people and children
National Citizen Service (NCS) workshops; 2015, 2016: animation workshops with groups of up to 30 young people. Stop motion – animating people, objects, chalk drawing on walls and pavement, cut-out animation.
Festival/museum workshops; 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014: walk-in stop motion animation workshops for the general public. All ages, all together, from older adults to toddlers.
Harder to reach children; 2007: creative animation filmmaking and storytelling to re-engage children who were disengaged from school.
Change Schools Program, secondary; 2006: using video production to make school subjects come alive.
Primary school animation activity workshops; 2006, 2012: stop motion wall art animation for whole class participation, outdoor stop motion people activities.
